Friday morning thunderstorms soaked a few shoes on the way to the kickoff breakfast, but by the time everyone had eaten and our Ad Astra Volunteer Awards had been presented, the rain stopped and the skies began to clear.
Participation in this year's Nancy Perry Day of Caring approached pre-pandemic levels, with 915 volunteers registered to work for 31 different agencies across the community. Only five outdoor projects had to be cancelled for the day, but three have already been rescheduled. And the Hill's Pet Nutrition volunteers doing some gardening for the YWCA graciously rescheduled their shift to the afternoon.
In all, 59 opportunities were completed by 825 volunteers, for an estimated 3,300 hours served between 9 am and 5 pm. The total economic impact for the agencies served is estimated to be just shy of $105,000! And our rescheduled opportunities will push our offical total higher.

None of this is possible without the tireless cooperation from our nonprofit partners and from our event sponsors. We also need to thank The Beacon for the beautiful kickoff venue and Chef Sean, his crew and Topeka Rescue Mission for making that delicious buffet the highlight of the morning. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for another memorable year of volunteering!
