Success Story: Topeka Rescue Mission – CaRE
The CaRE program serves residents of the Topeka Rescue Mission who need help learning or polishing the soft skills that are essential to employment. The hope is that working on these skills in a real work environment is the final boost these individuals need to get back on the employment track. United Way supports the CaRE program with a Financial Stability Impact Grant.
When L. entered the program, she was quiet, shy and lacked self-confidence. She did not initiate conversation, ask questions or seek out resources to help herself. Through her participation in the program she gained self- confidence and motivation. While in the CaRE Program, L. stated she learned she was strong, she mattered and could do anything that she put her mind to. During her participation in the CaRE Program L. decided to enroll in Washburn University and will begin taking classes towards a degree in Graphic Design. L. was offered position at the Helping Hands Humane Society after her internship there, but she accepted a different job with the Department of Children and Family Services.
Sometimes all an unsheltered person needs is a chance. You gave L. hope that there was a way out of homelessness and unemployment. Because you cared, L. is on her way to an education, a new career and a financially stable life.
