National Make A Will Month

National Make a Will Month with Oliverius Society logo

Did you know August is National Make a Will month? This is a great time to review your will or consider writing one to protect your loved ones after you are gone.

Why do I need a will?

A will is a legal document that lets you determine what happens to your estate after you die. By having a will, you can prevent potential disputes and conflicts among your family members or loved ones, safeguarding your estate from unnecessary legal battles. A will also can designate guardians for your minor children, giving you peace of mind that they will be cared for exactly the way you wish. Crafting a will is a responsible and thoughtful act that provides reassurance, guaranteeing that your legacy is preserved and executed according to your desires.

Even celebrities aren’t immune from the consequences of not having a will! You can read more here about the six-year legal battle that ensued after the singer Prince died without leaving a will: https://bit.ly/3Y3XwDl

A Convenient Way to Give

A last will and testament is also an easy way to make a gift to your favorite charitable organization. In your will, you can leave an exact amount or a percentage of your estate to benefit a nonprofit organization. Your lawyer or financial planner can help iron out those details.

If you have an uncomplicated estate, there is even a powerful free tool that helps you build your own will online. You can access the tool, named FreeWill, here: https://www.freewill.com/unitedway.

Leaving a Legacy of Impact

Donors who include United Way of Kaw Valley in their will are leaving a legacy of impact in their community. Your planned gift lifts our community by empowering individuals and families to find their best future. In recognition of this level of commitment, donors who include UWKV in their will are invited to join our Oliverius Society. Learn more about the Oliverius Society and our planned giving options here: https://www.uwkawvalley.org/planned-giving

If you’d like to discuss any of these options further, please reach out to Angel Romero at aromero@uwkawvalley.org or call 785.228.5128.
