What Do You Know? Donor-Advised Funds

DAF Header Newseltter.png

Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) are one of the fastest-growing ways to give, yet many generous donors still have questions—or even misconceptions—about how they work. Let’s clear up a few common myths about DAFs.

Myth #1: “I can’t support local causes through my DAF.”

Truth: You absolutely can! Gifts from your Donor Advised Fund can go directly to United Way of Kaw Valley, where they’ll make a tangible impact on families and communities right here in our region. Simply recommend a grant from your fund to United Way of Kaw Valley (EIN: 48-0561978) and designate it for the area or initiative you care about most. You can also use the DAF tool on our website here: https://www.uwkawvalley.org/daf

Myth #2: “Giving from a DAF doesn’t count as real philanthropy.”

Truth: DAF gifts are just as meaningful as direct donations. They allow donors to be strategic, thoughtful, and sometimes even more generous -- especially when using appreciated assets. Every dollar recommended from your DAF helps United Way continue our work to build healthy and resilient communities.

Myth #3: “It’s complicated to give through my DAF.”

Truth: Most major financial institutions make it incredibly easy. Whether your fund is with Fidelity Charitable, Schwab, Vanguard, or a community foundation, recommending a grant to United Way of Kaw Valley can usually be done in just a few clicks.

Myth #4: “DAF gifts can’t support specific programs or initiatives.”

Truth: You can recommend your grant for a particular United Way focus area -- like youth opportunity, financial security, or healthy community -- or simply designate it as unrestricted support so we can direct it to where it’s needed most.

Donor Advised Funds offer a smart, flexible, and impactful way to give. If you have a DAF, consider recommending a grant to United Way of Kaw Valley this year and help create lasting change right here at home.
