The first class of the newest version of UWGT's Board Leadership training met at Washburn University on January 19. To allow for more social distancing, the class was limited to just 30 attendees. Included in that enrollment are X scholarship recipients, part of an effort to increase equitable access to the course and reduce the burden for those interested in beginning board service.
Day one of the training looked like this:
8:00AM - Welcome to the Board
You have all shown interest in serving in our community in a board leadership capacity by registering for this training. Here we will take a little time to learn more about the individuals that are participating in this cohort. We will dive into understanding purpose, what is the reason your organization exists in our community. We will also consider responsibility: the responsibility of the Board as a whole and your responsibility as a board member.
9:00AM - Why Do you Serve
Understanding the importance of servant leadership. Learning about the key characteristics of servant leadership and why it is a strong theory of leadership that matters to you as a board volunteer. We will also take some time to reflect on who you are and how that presents in any meeting.
9:35AM - Elevating the Voices of Others
Making sure your organization hits the mark. Why do diversity and inclusion matter to the success of your agency. How do we ensure that we properly engage a diverse group of individuals on our board as we seek to advance the mission? How to we elevate the voices of others to make sure that we allow all voices to be heard?
10:15AM - Strategic Impact
Understanding your “Why” and developing a strategic plan that works. We will consider who and what should be included in your strategic plan and how you can successfully engage others to make a plan that works for your organization and the community you serve.
