We sat down for a quick Q&A with new Pathways Coordinator Sarah Karns. Sarah is a vital piece of our Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant and ultimately will transition to become a permanent part of Heartland Healthy Neighborhoods.
What were you doing right before coming to United Way?
I worked as the Project Coordinator for the Office of Rural Prosperity within Kansas Department of Commerce. I worked with rural communities across the state on community and economic development projects. Before that, I worked as the Nutrition Services Coordinator at Harvesters – The Community Food Network in Topeka.
How long have you lived in/around Topeka?
I was born and raised in Holton and have lived in Topeka for the past seven years.
What is your new role at UWGT/HHN?
I am serving as the Pathways to a Healthy Kansas Coordinator and will also move into the HHN Director role in the next six months or so. Working with HHN workgroups and community partners, I offer support and guidance to those implementing Pathways work, which is focused on three main areas for the Shawnee County community: healthy eating, physical activity, and commercial tobacco control.
What about this job excites you the most?
I am most excited about the strides that can be made toward a healthier Shawnee County through partnerships with those in the community who are focused on similar health outcomes and goals.
How can people get involved with/support the work you do?
Learning more and having conversations around social determinants of health and what the health needs of Shawnee County residents are is a great place to start. Watching the HHN social media platforms for community involvement opportunities is another great option. And of course anyone with questions or suggestions can always reach out to me personally!
