Every year the United Way of Kaw Valley (previously United Way of Douglas County) gives out an award named in honor of the late Wallace Galluzzi, celebrating the outstanding achievements of local volunteers, and promoting exceptional volunteerism as an important way that individuals can make positive impacts in our community.
Wallace Galluzzi came to Lawrence in 1963 to serve as president of Haskell University, where there is still a hall named in his honor, and later an officer with the Douglas County Bank. He was one of the most personally popular people in Lawrence. In 1983 he volunteered to lead the United Way Campaign, then known as the United Fund Drive.
Wally approached his volunteer efforts with great enthusiasm and powerful optimism. When he took on a volunteer project, he was both thorough and creative in approaching the task. An inspirational leader, he was incredibly cordial and warm, as well as funny. His passion for volunteering made him an outstanding spokesperson for his favorite volunteer activities. His dedication as a volunteer inspired the United Way board to honor his passing and his legacy with an annual volunteer recognition, The Galluzzi Awards.
