How did you get to school when you were a kid? Did you walk? Ride your bike? How safe was your everyday route?
Pathways to a Healthy Kansas and Heartland Healthy Neighborhoods (HHN) are partnering with the City of Topeka and Topeka Public Schools to create and implement a Safe Routes to School plan. This plan will focus on making sure all kids attending Topeka Public Schools can get to school safely, regardless of where they live in the district. The national Safe Routes program promotes walking and bicycling to school through infrastructure improvements, enforcement, tools, safety education, and incentives.
At Stormont Vail's May "Walk with a Doc" event, Pathways and HHN presented a $30,000 check to the City of Topeka for its work in developing the Safe Routes plan, which is a cooperative effort of the City of Topeka, Shawnee County, Topeka Public Schools and HHN.
