More than 200 households signed up for Christmas Bureau in just one day.
This has been a difficult year for so many of our neighbors. Everything seems more expensive, from rent and utilities, to food, to medication, to transportation. Our partners across the county tell us they are seeing surprisingly high numbers of people looking for the basics, even people who have never before had to ask for help.
Your neighbors need you this holiday season, and United Way of Kaw Valley has a time-honored way for you to step up.
You can adopt an individual or a family (or multiple families) through this year's Shawnee County Christmas Bureau. Get together with family, your office mates, or friends from school or your faith community to spread a little joy this season.
Adopters agree to purchase a holiday meal (or the ingredients for one) along with a few gifts for each person in the house. You get to shop for and wrap gifts and deliver them to the family before Christmas. This is a great need that simply can't be met by our local service agencies. It's only with the help of people like you that we can make the holidays brighter for so many.
If you would like to help, please visit our website starting the week of October 30 and complete the online form telling us how many people you would like take care of and how to contact you. When we finish signing up applicants on Nov. 4, we will begin matching families and adopters. Be patient, our volunteers work hard to ensure that everyone's information is entered accurately, and that takes time. We'll contact you with the details of your match as soon as we can. Our goal is to match all families before Thanksgiving.
