Claire Larson serves as an AmeriCorps member at Heartland Community Health Center in Lawrence. Heartland accepts all patients regardless of income or insurance status and provide quality and compassionate health care to all people in Lawrence and surrounding areas – focusing on integrated, patient-centered care for all. Heartland seeks to expand access to health care, promote healthy lifestyles and build healthy communities.
Claire mainly assists in the Care Cupboard and with the Community Health Worker team. This involves checking shoppers into the food pantry, quality/quantity control and training volunteers. She also helps with resource navigation, helping shoppers and patients find help with housing, clothing, bill assistance and more.
Recently Claire has also started helping with Heartlands “Food Is Medicine” program, a program that helps patients manage their Type II diabetes. Food Is Medicine offers monthly nutrition/cooking classes that focus on healthy but accessible meals. She is looking forward to presenting a smoothie class that she has created because making healthy living attainable for everyone is a long term career goal of hers. She says her favorite part of working at Heartland is "being able to help those in need and see a lasting, positive change on the shoppers/patients I see every week!"
